A member of our staff will contact you prior to your procedure to go over the details of your surgery, including arrival times, medical history for anesthesia and to answer questions you may have.
If you have not spoken with a member of our staff 24-hours prior to your scheduled surgery, PLEASE call the pre-op nurse at 800-461-EYES (3937).
If you are unable to reach us during business hours, you may leave a voice mail giving permission for us to speak with a relative regarding your medical history or to leave pre-admission instructions and day of surgery information on your answering machine. Due to new HIPPA Privacy Laws we will not be able to speak with anyone about your surgery or medical history unless we first receive your permission.
What Should I Expect at My Appointment?
New patients should plan to spend 1 ½ hours to 3 hours for their first appointment, so we can do a complete and thorough exam. They should also plan to arrive at the center 45 minutes prior to the procedure.
Please bring the following with you for the appointment:
- Your driver’s license or picture ID
- A list of your current medications.
- All health insurance cards so we can assist you with filing
- Any forms you filled out, including a complete list of current medications (You can download new patient forms here)
- A portion of your procedure payment. Our policy is to collect the co-pay, co-insurance and deductibles at the time of service. We accept cash, check, Visa, MasterCard and Discover.
- If you’re younger than 18, you must have a parent or guardian accompany you to sign your paperwork.
- If you are an adult who is unable to sign the consent, you must have someone with you who is authorized to sign on your behalf.
- Bring the name and phone number of the person (must be 16 years or older with a valid driver’s license) who will be taking you home. You will not be permitted to drive, take a taxi alone or leave the center without an adult chaperone.
- Bring all required eye medicines prescribed since they will be used immediately after your surgery.
- Due to Indiana Law, if you have a legal Power of Attorney who makes your medical decisions, we are required to obtain their consent to treat you and bill your insurance. Please make sure your Power of Attorney is either with you or that we are able to reach them by phone prior to your appointment. Also, if possible, bring a copy of the legal documents so that we may keep documentation in your medical record.
- Due to new government regulation, we must inform you, that our physicians have partial ownership in the EyeCare Consultants Surgery Center. You will be given a form the day of your appointment entitled “Patient’s Rights and Notification of Physicians Ownership” to sign.
Preparing for Your Surgery
- For cataract surgery do not eat or drink anything up to two hours before your procedures. All other procedures must not eat or drink up to six hours before your procedures. This is vitally important and failure to comply will result in complications and may result in postponement of your procedure. If your child is having surgery outside of our ASC, please be sure he/she does not eat or drink anything after midnight. If your child is an infant, our anesthesiologist may have additional instructions for you.
- If you or your child take medications for high blood pressure or diabetes, contact your surgeon or discuss this with one of our nursing staff to ensure proper instructions to take or discontinue the medication.
- If you experience any health change between your recent visit to your doctor and the day of the procedure, notify your doctor. Please report even minor changes such as an elevated temperature, cough or cold.
- If you suspect that you are pregnant, please notify your doctor.
- For your own safety and protection, you will not be allowed to drive a motor vehicle following your procedure. Please make arrangements to have someone bring you and escort you home from the center. Parents may want to have an additional adult to assist in accompanying a child home.
Day of Surgery
- Bathe or shower and brush your teeth the morning of your procedure. Mascara, make-up, lipstick and contacts should be removed prior to the morning of the procedure.
- Dress comfortably. Tight fitting clothing may feel restrictive following some procedures and sensible shoes allow ambulating to be easier following anesthesia.
- Please leave all valuables at home, including jewelry, wallets and purses. (But don’t forget your insurance cards/insurance forms and proof of identification.)
- Limit the number of people accompanying you. We request only one to maximize the comfort of everyone waiting.
- Cell phones are not allowed past the waiting room.
After Your Procedure
- Following your procedure, you will be moved to our fully equipped recovery area. There, our anesthesia and nursing staff will closely monitor you. The length of stay varies, and most patients are discharged in less than an hour.
- Your physician will provide post-procedure instructions regarding diet, rest and medication. The center will provide you with a written summary of these instructions.
- Plan to have someone stay with you for 24 hours following your procedure and pamper yourself during this time.
- Since it is normal to feel drowsy after receiving anesthetic medication, we also recommend that you postpone the following activities for 24 hours after discharge:
- Signing important papers
- Making significant decisions
- Drinking alcoholic beverages
- Driving and operating equipment
